It's the last day of school. You are now officially Second Graders! We are so very thankful that we got to be your teachers this year. You are truly one of the very best, most memorable classes we have had. Thank you for an amazing year!! We were afraid this day would be full of many, many tears, but we were able to keep it together. We ended the day with LOTS of selfies and a dance party. So much fun with a great group of kids.
Parents, this is the time of year we reflect on this year and begin to look toward next year. We remember the day we met you at Sneak a Peek. Some of you were a little hesitant about your child being in our BIG combined classroom. How do you feel now? What would you say to next year's parents about their child being in the new Team Spiccard? We appreciate the feedback and like to post it on the "Parent Reviews" page. Please send us an email to either [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you!
A note from Logan's mom:
Logan would love to meet up this summer with friends. I created a Google sheet for anyone who wants to share contact info to update and this can be updated as wanted.

All the pictures that are posted on this website will stay up through the summer. Who knows, Ms. Spinks may even find time to post some more.

A note from Mrs. Bowen:
Parents,
The next content acquisition process will include K-12 Science and Social Studies. As we continue to establish a balanced instructional approach as outlined in the Cobb Commitment, we will consider resources that support this model and address the needs identified through our needs assessment and district data. As part of the Phase I process, the district is asking teachers, administrators and parents to complete on online Needs Assessment Survey. The survey will be open until May 23, 2017. Thank you!

TODAY WAS AN AMAZING DAY FOR TEAM SPICCARD!! EVERY student did an incredible job presenting their research with confidence, excitement, poise and maturity. They received raving reviews from every student, teacher, administrator and parent that came through. Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks are so very, very proud of each and every one of you! What an amazing way to end an amazing school year. We had several teachers disappointed they didn't get to come today; therefore, we decided to reopen the Spiccard Animal Museum tomorrow. We will follow the same schedule as today, but we will stop at 12:20. We will have 3 sessions in the morning (group A 9:30, group B 9:50, and Group C 10:10). We will also have 3 sessions after lunch (Group A 11:20, Group B 11:40, and Group C 12:00). If you missed today, maybe you can make it tomorrow. Your child can tell you in which group they will present.
Thursday is our Folk Tale Olympics. This is going to be a super fun day for students as they do fun games related to Folk Tale Heroes. We will then have a cook-out lunch. We will be having hot dogs, chips, juice box, and desert. We will wear our class t-shirts. Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks have the shirts for you to put on that morning. If you paid for your shirt, you get to wear it home! At 1:30, all first graders will have yearbook signing. If you purchased a yearbook, you bring it in that day to have your first grade friends sign it. If you did not purchase a yearbook, we will give you time to make an autograph book so you can get autographs too.
Friday we will be saying HATS OFF TO A GREAT YEAR! Wear a crazy hat. Ms. Spinks got a crazy hat for Mother's Day, and she is excited to wear it.
Monday is our Auction day. Lots of great things are up for auction, so bring an empty book bag to take home all your loot. This day will be Mrs. Riccard day, so wear green and purple.
Tuesday is our special gift day. Bring an empty book bag so you have room to take it home. We will dismiss 2 hours early. This day will be Ms. Spinks day, so wear red and black.
Wednesday is your last day of first grade. You can't take anything home, so come empty handed. If you bring your lunch, please make sure it is in a disposable bag. We have fallen in love with each and every one of the "Characters" in this class. On this day, dress up like your favorite cartoon character! At the final bell, we can all say, "Yabba Dabba Dooooooo."

It is so hard to believe we just have 8 more wake-ups this year. Parents, please, please make sure your child is at school and on time each day. We are still teaching and assessing standards every day. We have some fun project based activities planned next week. We will be making some great memories that you do NOT want to miss!
A note went home today concerning our Spiccard Animal Museum. Students have been working so hard on researching an animal. They have worked in cooperative groups written speeches, created models, built a habitat and are now getting ready to present. Monday, we will be finalizing and practicing. That night students will be bringing home their speeches to work on memorizing. Please help them so they can present with confidence. See the schedule below to know the times when your child will be presenting. We hope you all will be able to find a time that will work for you to come see your child's presentation. When you come to the museum (Mrs. Riccard's classroom door), please wait outside for the Museum Guide to give you directions and guide you through.

Thursday, May 18 is our First Grade Folk Tale Olympics. We will be outside most of the day. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Make sure to wear sneakers. We will also be wearing our class t-shirts. Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks have these and will give you time to change when you get to school. At the end of the day, students who paid for their shirt will get to wear them home.
Thursday, May 18 at 1:30 will be First Grade yearbook signing. Students who purchased a yearbook are invited to bring it to school that day so they can have their first grade friends sign their book. Students who did not purchase a yearbook will be given the opportunity to make an autograph book so they can also get signatures from their first grade friends.
The last week of school we will have some fun dress-up days. More information will be coming home toward the end of next week.
Monday, May 22, is our class auction. This will be your final chance to spend your OWL dollars. Keep in mind, next week is your last opportunity to earn as many OWLs as you can. That morning you will want to come to school with an empty book bag. It will certainly be filled to the brim that afternoon.
Tuesday, May 23 is an early release day. Mrs. Riccard & Ms. Spinks have a very special treat to send home with everyone. Come to school with an empty book bag so your treat will fit.
Wednesday, May 24 is an early release day. It's also the last day of school. (Shhhhhhhh! Don't talk about it to Ms. Spinks. She WILL start crying!) Students are not allowed to take anything home on the bus this day. Leave book bags at home. If you bring your lunch, bring it in a disposable bag.

On Friday we had an amazing time on our field trip to the pond. We were so excited Ms. Aguirre joined us. Be sure to check out the pictures taken by Mrs. Riccard. Ms. Aguirre took a LOT of pictures, too. I am working on getting those uploaded.
Today was our field day. We had an AMAZING day. All the students were well behaved, and had a lot of fun going through the stations. We ended the day with the first grade tug-of-war and popsicles. Check out all the pictures. Ms. Spinks took lots and lots.
Monday, May 8 is our final STEAM day. This is our favorite STEAM rotation. Please check out the sign-up genius for a few items we still need. This rotation needs at least 12 adults to help us make it amazing. Hopefully you can find the time in your schedule to join us. ( https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/10C0C44ADAA23AAFD0-community1 )
We are working on our BIG animal projects. Hopefully parents have heard about it. We are creating an animal museum for students all around Cheatham Hill to visit and hear our presentations. The Spiccard Animal Museum will be open all day on Tuesday, May 16. Our families are also invited to come walk through. As soon as our schedule is finalized, we will send home information so you can come at a time that works best for you.
A Note from Mrs. Bowen:
As we shared in the fall, the National PTA School of Excellence program is designed to support our school and PTA as we strengthen family-school partnerships that enrich students’ educational experiences and overall well-being. One step in the process is to gather feedback from our school family on the frequency of family engagement strategies implemented by our school. A huge thank you to everyone who took a minute to complete this survey at the beginning of the year. In order to be considered for the National PTA School of Excellence designation we also need to conduct the survey at end of the year. You will be able to access this survey until May 19, 2017. Thank you!

WHEW! This fall has flown by!! So much has been happening. I have started updating this page what seems like a bazillion times to only be interrupted and forgotten.
Since my last update, we've had Pumpkin STEAM rotations, and Lewis & Clark rotations. Both of those days were amazing. The students have so much fun having hands on learning. We could not do it without the help of our parents. Thank you, thank you for your donations of supplies and time.
Our December STEAM rotation is Monday, December 19. We will set up at 11:15 and start rotations by 11:30. This is going to double as our class holiday party. We hope to have 13 stations where students get to travel around the world learning about winter holiday traditions from different countries; therefore, we anticipate going until 2:00. The stations include games, crafts, stories, building, creativity, and fun. Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, & Uncles are invited to come help us run the stations. Check out the sign-up genius to see what supplies are needed: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44adaa23aafd0-holiday1
Please send in supplies by this Friday, December 16. That way we will have time to get everything prepped and organized.
From the CHES Office:
A note from administration explaining our end of semester assessments was sent home today. Our classes are scheduled in the computer lab to take the Reading Inventory and Math Inventory on Wednesday, December 21 which is our last day before break. If you already know your child is going to be absent, please let us know so we can go ahead give them the test.
We love having fun dress-up days as we count down until our break. Everyone did a GREAT job dressing up like a Reindeer. Unfortunately our day was so busy, I never got a chance to take any pictures. I will do better in the future.
Friday, December 16 is GRINCH DAY. Think green. Dress up like a character from the Dr. Seuss book.
Monday, December 19 is PJ DAY. Wear your favorite PJs. Remember we are going to be doing our craft rotations and school dress codes still apply.
Tuesday, December 20 is ELF DAY. Dress up like an elf. Hats, pointy ears, jingle bells, red and green. Have fun!
Wednesday, December 21 is SNOWMAN DAY. Dress up like a snowman. White, boots, scarves, hats, etc.
Wednesday, December 21 is our last day before Winter Break. ASP will be closing at 5:00PM on that day.

We are so very proud of all our students during CoGAT. EVERY student listened, followed directions and stayed focused.
This week we also had a visit from Tappy The Turtle who came from the Cobb Water System. All week he taught us all about water and what we can do to be good stewards of our water. On Monday, one of his friends from the Water System came out and taught us about the water cycle. We made some puppets to help us remember. Of course Ms. Spinks took lots of pictures which she will get posted very soon. To view the pictures taken this year, click on 2016-2017 at the top of this page. This will take you directly to the page of photo galleries.
We have a lot going on next week. Tuesday is our Benjamin Franklin Field trip to the Marietta Square. We will be visiting the Fire Department, the Fire Museum, the Police Department and the Public Library. We will then head to Laurel Park for lunch and recess. We will be leaving at 9:15 and returning to school around 1:45. This trip will include a good deal of walking so dress for the weather.
Thursday (11:30-1:30) is our first STEAM Rotations. This is a fun time for students and parents as we get to do exploration, construction and artistic activities related to our Social Studies and Science curriculum. We are still in need of 5 volunteers to help us run the stations. In the past we have had moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Any and all are welcome. Go to the sign-up genius to volunteer. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44adaa23aafd0-steam1

What a fun day we have had! First our counselor, Ms. Bartlett, came in and taught us all about being a good listener and learner. After lunch, Carter's mom came and read two of her favorite books (An Extraordinary Egg and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back). We then got to go to the media center to check out new books. Mrs. Buro introduced us to weather.
If you would like to come read to the class, please go to the Sign-Up Genius to find a time that will work for you. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44adaa23aafd0-read
A note from PTA:
Parents,
Unfortunately, we are going to have to reschedule our Latino PTA meeting tonight. Ms. Cardoza, our translator, had a death in the family. As soon as we are able to reschedule, we will let you know. Thank you and we apologize for any inconvenience.
Estimados padres,
Gracias y disculpe cualquier inconveniencia.
If your child is interested in joining the Homeless Pets Club, the registration form is due tomorrow.

Field Trip and T-Shirt money is due tomorrow, Friday, August 26. We need this in so we can place the order for t-shirts and complete the planning of our first field trip which is scheduled for September.
A note from our principal:
Parents:
Nicole Meador, our Academic Coach, will be hosting an informational meeting for parents on the MI (Math Inventory) and RI (Reading Inventory). This is the computer-based assessment our students recently took to measure their current reading and math skills. This meeting will take place next Thursday, September 1, 6:15-7:15 in the Media Center. If you have any questions regarding this assessment, we are hopeful that you will be able to join us.

Thank you to everyone who came to Open House. We had a great turn-out and enjoyed talking with you all. Thank you so very much to our co-room parents, Mrs. Chatterjee, Mrs. Pittman, and Mrs. Charpentier. Together we are going to have an amazing year with some fantastic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) rotation days.
We would love to have you come read your favorite children's book or your child's favorite book to our class. Click on this link for Sign-Up Genius to reserve a time.
Reminders:
**Send in field trip and t-shirt money as soon as possible. We want to get t-shirts ordered quickly so we will have them back in time for our first field trip in September.
**We need back the signed performing arts permission form for each child.
**Picture day is August 25. All students will have their picture made. This is the picture for the yearbook; however, only students who bring in the envelope and money that day will get copies of their pictures. If you want to purchase pictures, but your child didn't make it home with the order form, please send us a note or an email so we can send home another.
**Don't forget to either send in or email us your "Parent Homework." Any information you give us about your child is valuable information to help us be the teachers he or she needs us to be.
Over the last two weeks we have been doing many activities to assess our levels, our learning styles and interests. Some of our lessons may seem like they are "so last year," but we are using them to establish a firm academic foundation of understanding. We've been learning classroom and school procedures and expectations. The most exciting thing we have been doing is building a sense of community within our class. We have put an emphasis on everyone being unique, but a very important part of the team. We are doing a fantastic job of becoming a successful team of learners who encourage each others' successes and struggles.
In language arts, we have read many books with a theme of teamwork. After reading the stories, we did response to literature craftivities. Be sure to check out the 2016-2017 tab in this website for lots of pictures. We have started daily practice reading and spelling common sight words and words with short vowels. Once we are able to read the words, we are working on correctly spelling the words every time we write them. In writing we have also been working on writing Super Sentences with more than 5 words, correct capitalization and punctuation. We are doing a fantastic job.
In math we are working on building our number sense. We are learning many ways to represent numbers and find new names for numbers (for ex, ample: 5 can be 4+1, 2+3, 0+5, 6-, 15-10, etc.). We are growing our understanding of +1, -1, +10, -10 and recognizing the similarities between the these.

What a great first week we had. We are enjoying getting to know each student. Thank you for completing and sending in all the beginning of the year paperwork. This week we read lots of books about teamwork. We have already done work showing off our response to literature, writing, creativity, and number subitizing. We also learned what it means to be an Outstanding Wonderful Learner and how to earn (or lose) OWL bucks.
Homework this week:
Watch some of the Olympic events with your family. The Olympics provide great teaching opportunities. Parents, you can to talk to your children about sportsmanship, goal setting, hard work, perseverance, teamwork, and patriotism. When the Star Spangled Banner is played during a medal ceremony, take the opportunity to teach your child how to stand at attention in honor of the country in which we live.
Students, draw a picture of yourself participating in one of the Olympic events you watch. Write telling all about your picture.
Open House
We look forward to seeing parents at Open House this Thursday. The PTA meeting will begin at 6:00. We will then have a 30 minute information session in our classroom at 6:30 and 7:00. This time is meant to be a time for parents to get information about our class. We understand if you must bring your child. In order to reduce distractions, we ask that you keep them sitting with you.
