OH MY! Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks had trouble this morning! The power was off. The alarm didn't go off. We were running late. We got dressed in the dark. Mrs. Riccard is wearing her pajama bottoms and her son's socks. She didn't even have time to fix her hair. Ms. Spinks forgot all about fixing her hair. She put on two different shoes, and her vest is on upside down. What a way to start the day.

Tomorrow is 1st Grade Folk Tale Olympics. We will be spending the morning outside, so be sure to send your child in appropriate clothes including tennis shoes. 1st thing in the morning, we will be passing out class t-shirts to wear. At the end of the day the shirts will be going home.
In addition, first grade students will be served a picnic lunch which will include a hot dog, chips, fruit drink, and popsicles. If your child would prefer, they may bring their own lunch or purchase a regular lunch from the cafeteria.

Whew! The past two weeks we have been caught in the end of-year whirlwind. It is so hard to imagine that we are only 6 early morning alarms away from the end of the year. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! For all of your thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity during Teacher Appreciation Week! Each gift was delivered by the precious smiling face of a very special child!
Yearbooks will be on sale Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20, from 7:15-7:45 a.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost is $35 CASH ONLY.
As the year comes to a close, let's have some silly dress-up days to help us have fond memories of Team Spiccard and 1st Grade.
Thursday, May 19 - 1st Grade Folk Tale Olympics - We will wear our class t-shirts and get to bring them home.
Friday, May 20 - Walk a Mile in Our Shoes - Wear crazy shoes. You can wear two different shoes or decorate some old shoes. Be creative
Monday, May 23 - Hats Off to an Amazing Year - Wear your favorite hat.
Tuesday, May 24 - Jamaican Us Crazy All Year - Dress in something related to the beach. Remember to follow the school dress code - no swim suits, please.
Wednesday, May 25 - Yabba Dabba Doo! We Made it 180 Days - Dress like your favorite Cartoon Character.
Important Book Bag Information:
Friday, May 20 - We will clean everything out of our desks and bring it all home. Bring an empty book bag so you have room tor pack it all up. (In all honesty, we've sent a lot of it home already, so we don't have much).
Monday, May 23 - We will have our Annual Spiccard Auction. You will want to bring an empty book bag so you can easily take home all of your cool purchases.
Tuesday, May 24 - Your teachers have a very special treat for you. Come to school with an empty book bag. You don't want anything to accidentally mess up your treat.
Wednesday, May 25 - It's the last day of school. You can't take anything home on the bus, so don't even bring it to school. This includes lunches - make sure all of your lunch is disposable.
End of the Year Early Release Dates
All CCSD students will be released early on May 24th & 25th, 2016, at the following times:
- 11:30 a.m. - High School Release

WE HAD SO MUCH FUN AT THE POND!! We are so proud of our class. They were amazing, and I am sure they are full of stories to be heard. Thank you to our fabulous chaperones. You were all amazing too! The plan is to get pictures posted tonight, but we'll see if Ms. Spinks can stay awake long enough to get it done.
Tomorrow is FIELD DAY! Students MUST WEAR SOCKS! One of the stations is inflatables. Students will take off their shoes, and must have socks to participate. It is going to be HOT!! Wear shorts, sneakers, and sunscreen. You will want to bring water. Make sure to put your name on the water bottle.
Tomorrow is also the day our school is recognizing "Children of the Military." Since our own Trevor is being recognized we want to honor him by wearing PURPLE. Dig deep and find that one shirt that has some purple or go all Ruth Rose and dress in all purple. This is optional - no need to go out and buy something.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! For all the "Birthday" wishes and gifts. What a pleasant "Surprise!" Be sure to look at the Photo Gallery for pictures the students took using the Birthday Photo Booth Prompts. The students had fun posing and using the class iPads to take pictures. ~Roxanne Spinks
Tomorrow is our field trip. YAY! We are watching the weather. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will still get to go tomorrow; however, we will NOT make that decision until tomorrow morning. Students need to wear sneakers that can get muddy or wet. We will be wearing our class t-shirts which your teacher will have in the morning. If you bring your lunch it MUST be in something that can be thrown away. Over many years that 1st grade has gone on this trip, we have acquired lots of equipment. There is no need to bring anything to use while at the pond. We also told students no need to bring book bags and folders tomorrow; however, notes concerning dismissal changes and absences will still need to come to class.
Friday is our Field Day is Friday. Friday is also a day when our school is recognizing students who have a parent currently in the military. Our school will be wearing purple in their honor. Since we are fortunate enough to have one of these students, Team Spiccard will be wearing purple for Field Day. Students will not need book bags and folders for Friday. They are welcome to bring water bottles. Please make sure they are marked with your first and last name, and your teacher's name.
For both days, remember to put on your SUNSCREEN before you leave home. We are not allowed to apply any sunscreen, so make sure you do that before you leave home.
The lunch menu for Field Day is: Turkey ham and Cheese Sandwich, Baby Carrots, Fresh Fruit, and Milk.
Thank you for sending in registration forms. We are just missing a few. Even if your child is not planning to return to Cheatham Hill next year, WE STILL NEED THE FORM AND ENVELOPE WITH 2 STAMPS. Please send those in as soon as possible.

Last week permission slips for our field trip to Sibley Pond went home. You paid for the trip at the beginning of the year, so now we just need the signed permission slip. Most students have returned them but if you have not please please do so ASAP. There seemed to be some confusion about which day we will be going. Our trip is Thursday, April 28. This is a fantastic trip for parents to help as chaperones. Please consider going with us. We will be outside ALL day. Please don't forget to wear sunscreen! We will wear our class t-shirts (Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks have those). NO SANDALS! You will also want to wear shoes that can get dirty.
First grade field day is the next day, Friday, April 29. We will be outside most of the day. REMEMBER SUNSCREEN! You will also want a water bottle. Please make sure you have it clearly marked with your first AND last name as well as your teacher's name. You will be doing PE activities all day so dress appropriately for comfort, but still keep in mind the dress code. Mrs. Riccard and Ms. Spinks will be up all night Thursday washing our class t-shirts and getting them ready for us to wear that day.
Next Monday, pre-printed registration cards and envelopes will be coming home. Please make sure you check the information for accuracy, sign the form and return. It is to be returned in the envelope. Since this envelope will be used to send home the last report card, please put TWO first class stamps on it and check that your address is correct. If you do not return the envelope with stamps, the final report card will not be mailed, but will be available in the office for you to pick up.
We are having so much fun learning all about animals, their needs, and attributes. In class today we viewed several live webcams of animals around the United States. Many students wanted to know how to access these while at home. I am providing links to these cameras below.
Panda Cam at Zoo Atlanta - http://www.zooatlanta.org/1212/panda_cam
Georgia Aquarium - http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/experience/explore/connect/webcams
Animal Planet Live - http://www.apl.tv/
Monterey Bay Aquarium - http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals-and-experiences/live-web-cams

Lion Cam at the National Zoo - http://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/webcams/lion-outside.cfm
Elephant Cam at the National Zoo - http://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/webcams/elephant.cfm
You can also go to http://www.earthcam.com/ to access thousands of webcams around the world. Just be cautious and present when students are choosing webcams as some are not necessarily appropriate for children.
Be sure to check out our Photo Gallery on this website to see what all we've been up to.

Tonight is our PTA performance. Students meet in our classroom at 6:15 while parents go find a seat. During the performance, our class is standing on the side AWAY from the PE room and CLOSE to the car rider line. We will be wearing our class t-shirts which will be in the classroom at 6:15. You should wear a short sleeved t-shirt, jeans (or pants) and sneakers. At the end of the performance, students will go back to the classroom to take off their class shirt. Parents, when you pick your child up in the classroom, please make sure a teacher sees you. Students have been practicing so hard all week. Some pictures from our practices and dress rehearsal for other students can be found in the gallery. We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!
Monday is Spring Picture Day. Everyone will have an individual picture made. Do not wear green. We will also have our class picture made.

We hope everyone had a fun and restful February Break. We came back in full gear ready to plow on. This is the time of year when we have very few schedule interruptions and are able to accomplish much. This is when our children grow in leaps and bounds - academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Our "battle cry" is "SECOND GRADE HERE I COME!" We use this phrase daily as we are pushing them as far as we can.
Unfortunately we have to cancel our Fun Curriculum Rotations that were scheduled for tomorrow. We just did not have enough volunteers signed up. This is always a fun time for students, but we need the volunteers in order to maintain a high quality of learning. Any supplies already sent in will be saved to use when we will try again in March.
Next week, on Thursday, March 3, all of first grade will be performing at the PTA meeting. The students have been busy preparing for this program. It is a FABULOUS program!! A notice went home yesterday concerning who, what, when, where, and what to wear. As soon as possible, please look it over, fill out the form and return it to us. For practice purposes, we need to get a tentative head count of all who will be there.

Thursday, January 28, 2016 - Curriculum Updates
Math: We have now investigated most of the concepts in the math book. The only ones we have not yet addressed are time and fractions. For the remainder of the year we will be revisiting all the concepts in order to build mastery and extension. To practice and gain math fluency, you can start working your way through the math book and practicing the basic math addition and subtraction facts.
Social Studies: We just completed a unit about Harriet Tubman.
Science: We are now exploring light and shadows.
Reading: Read, read, read. Remember to talk about, retell, make predictions and inferences about what you are reading.
Writing: The focus is on opinion writing. Students must write an introductory sentence. A sentence stating an opinion. Three or more sentences of facts to support the opinion, and a concluding sentence.

What happens when 37 students and 2 teachers all do the "Snow Dance" at the same time? A Blizzard! Check out the pictures of our snow day in the photo gallery.
Due to possible weather. All Cobb County Schools will be closing 2 hours early tomorrow. ASP will be closed. If your child's transportation needs to change make sure you send in a note. Without a note, we will send home the normal "Friday Way." The Sock Hop has also been cancelled for Saturday.

As we hear rumors of inclement weather, please keep in mind your child's Emergency Early Dismissal Form. If your circumstances have changed, please let us know how your child is to go home in the event of an emergency early dismissal.
Today we learned the "Snow Dance." Some students asked that I post the directions in case they forget tonight.
1. Put PJs on inside out and backwards.
2. Get a cup of ice and a spoon.
3. Go into the restroom.
4. Use the spoon to scoop the ice into the toilet.
5. As the ice is flushing, dance and sing "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow."
6. Put the spoon under the pillow you sleep on.
7. Get a good night's rest.
8. When you wake up, check the news to see if it worked, and we get to stay home.

Welcome Back!
Today your child is getting a shiny new folder. The graphic on the folder says "Homework." We will be using it as you the daily take home folder. We will use the folder to send home any notes, information, daily work and graded work. You will use the folder to send in any correspondence for us. The folder will go home every afternoon and should be returned to school every morning. We are compiling new stickers with log-in information for the websites used by Cheatham Hill students. We will get these stickers put in the new folders by the end of the week.
We are now on the down hill slide into 2nd grade. Strap on your skates. This is an exciting time that is full of learning. Please make sure you come to school every day healthy, well rested, well fed and ready to learn. Reminder: Keep All Toys At Home!
We will be experiencing some cold weather this winter. We will be going outside any day it is not raining. On PE days, students go outside for 15 minutes beginning at 8:15. Please make sure your child has appropriate warm clothes. Also please make sure your child's name is inside any clothing articles that might be removed anytime during the day. This includes hats and gloves.
A note concerning homework for the rest of the year is coming home today. It is printed on a blue sheet of paper. A copy of the letter can be found below.
In Georgia, icy, winter weather can sometimes take us by surprise. Occasionally we've had to send students home early. In the beginning of the year you completed an "Emergency Inclement Weather Form" letting us know how to send your child home in the event of an unscheduled early dismissal. Sometimes our lives and situations change. If you want to update how your child is to go home if the school has an emergency early dismissal, please complete the form below and send it in your child's folder.

We have had such a busy, busy year that the year has flown by! It is so hard to believe this is the last week before Winter Break. This week is no different. We have quite a bit going on. Wednesday at 11:30 is our holiday party. Come join us and work with your child to build a gingerbread house. Any and all parents, grandparents and younger siblings are welcome to join our fun. This is taking the place of our STEAM rotations for December.
On Wednesday we will also have time to look through our Santa bags and see what our friends stuffed it with. A note went home about the Santa Bag Stuffers two weeks ago. Another reminder will be coming home on Monday. The treats don't have to be elaborate. Just a little something you think your friends will like. We have 35 students.
Let's make this week extra fun by having some dress-up days. PLEASE do NOT go out and buy anything special!! Go through your house and be creative making your outfit to match the theme.
Tuesday - SNOWMAN DAY - dress up like a snowman with a scarf, boots and hat
Wednesday - FESTIVE DAY - this is our party day. Wear something festive. Keep in mind building a gingerbread house is going to get messy, so nothing fancy shmancy.
Thursday - ELF DAY - dress like an elf. Think tacky Christmas sweater, red and green, stripes and polka dots, hat
Friday - REINDEER DAY - dress like a reindeer. Wear brown, a red (or black) nose, and don't forget the sleigh bells.
This week is going to fun and exciting, but please remember we are still in school and still have lots of learning to do. We have end-of-quarter assessments. We promise to use fun activities for learning, but we still need to stay focused and do our best.

We have had a busy, busy start to our year. We read LOTS of books by Julia Cook which have helped us become a winning team. In math we have been building a strong foundation in number sense from 0 to 120. We also compared the length of objects and learned to use math vocabulary (short, shorter, shortest, long, longer, longest, etc.) to talk about them mathematically. In reading we have been reading lots of books and discussing the characters, setting, and main idea. We've used that information to become writers. We have been writing narrative stories and learned to use transitional words such as first, next, then, and last.
Our first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Connection day was amazing. Thank you, thank you to all the parents who sent in donations and who volunteered their time. Without your help, the rotations would not have been nearly as much fun. We were able to learn about Johnny Appleseed, apples, weather, and the scientific process. Most importantly we were able to see that learning is fun.
Starting tomorrow all of first grade will be taking the CoGAT. Many people want to know what they can do to help their child do well on the test. I am so glad you asked. Your child needs to get a good night's rest, and eat a healthy, high protein breakfast. Remind your child the importance of being a good listener.

We are having a super first week of school. Your children are PRECIOUS! We have been busy learning how to be a 1st grader.
PTA has ordered Daily Take Home Folders for us. They have not come in yet. We are expecting them some time next week. Until the folders come in, we will use the Cobb County first day of school folders. Please be sure to check your child's backpack for papers.
