Summer 2019
Thank you all so very much for an amazing year. Next year's class has some big shoes to fill. I hope your summer is filled with many adventures and explorations. Remember to stop by my new room at Sneak-a-Peek to say, "hi."

We are super excited to get started on researching animals. We are learning about what they look like, what they eat, where they live and other interesting facts. We will be creating the Enchanted Forest Animal Museum. Go HERE and HERE to see videos from previous years.
SAVE THE DATE! Our goal is to present our museum on Thursday, March 28. More information with exact times will be coming home soon.

A great opportunity:

This week we started a fun unit on Scarecrows. We are busy building a "garden" for the Enchanted Forest. We have pumpkins and crows. Next week we will try to "grow some corn," and will need to make some scarecrows to protect our crops. I am so excited to meet with all of you and tell you of the amazing things we are doing.
Next week is conference week. Students are dismissed 2 hours early every day so I have the opportunity to meet with parents. A conference schedule was sent home today. It is also posted below. I have been known to lose track of time. If I run over your time, please politely knock to let me know you are here.
The book fair is open in the Library Learning Commons all next week. Today we did a walk through preview and filled out a wish list. It opens every day at 7:15. Students are to go to their classroom first as no backpacks are allowed. The lines in the morning are usually quite long, and we will have specials beginning at 8:10. If you are coming to the book fair WITH your child, I will by all means let them go. If a student brings money to go by themselves, I will make time during the day. That way they will be able to have someone help them if needed.
You should be receiving an email or seeing a Facebook or Twitter post from Mrs. Bowen about our Voyage character of the week. Voyage is a great character education program that gives us vocabulary to talk about during our morning OWL huddles. These words and their definitions are also hanging outside the school's front office. So far we have learned that Respect is showing consideration for yourself, others and the world around you; and Patience is waiting for the best thing even when you don't feel like it. One of the components is to choose a "Voyager of the Week." This person is chosen by the class as someone who they have seem exhibiting the character word. Our first Voyager of the week for Respect was Maxx. Last week our Voyager of the week for Patience was Jihad. Congratulations to Maxx and Jihad for showing good character and congratulations to the class for recognizing them.

Well it never fails, I always start the year off right, then life hits and get behind on updating the website. September just flew by! We got into a groove and the OWLs of the Enchanted Forest are soaring. In September we had a new OWL join our class. Everyone did a great job welcoming Isabell to our class. We are so lucky that she is a part of our class. We also welcomed Ms. Miyah Wallace. She is a student from Kennesaw State University who is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. She will be visiting our classroom several times each month to observe what we do and to work with students individually.
It sounds like everyone had an amazing Fall Break. This week has been fabulous. We have really worked together as a team in order to accomplish a lot. As the 1st 9 weeks draws to an end, we are showing off all that we have learned. Reminder that conference week is coming up soon. If you have not returned the conference schedule form, please do so as soon as possible. I am looking forward to meeting with all parents to talk about this amazing group of students. A shout out to each and every Outstanding Wonderful Learner here in the Enchanted Forest. I am encouraged by their work ethic and desire to make good decisions. Everyone gets their work completed, and no one complains if they need to take a little longer or have to redo some part. '
Everyone is doing a great job on their homework packets. Today graded packets were sent home. Students received 1 OWL buck for every completed activity. I loved seeing the pictures of the wind socks. You are a very creative group.
Tomorrow is the Cheatham Hill Fall Festival. I am so sad that I won't be able to be here. I will be in Alabama cheering on ,my son and the Hillgrove Marching Band at this season's first competition. I hope to see lots of pictures from the Fall Festival and look forward to hearing all about it.
Tuesday is picture re-take day.
Thursday is an early release day. Students are dismissed 2 hours early. Please remember that if your child is to go home a different way, send a note in his or her Daily Communication folder.

Whew! What an amazing week. We are getting our routines and procedures down pat. We learned all about our Voice Meter. We are working hard on finding our "6 inch voice" so that we can start centers. The class pets, Raphael and Leapster made the grand arrival to our classroom. We are so excited. Raphael has been gracious to pop his head out. He has also allowed us to watch him eat lunch. Leapster is still acting shy and hiding most of the day. Once he gets more comfortable we will get to see him more.
The Boosterthon Fun Run was so much fun. We really enjoyed the Mind Spark character videos . Our class had the highest amount of pledges for all of 1st grade. We earned lots of extra recess, crazy socks, a movie hour, popsicles, extra free time, and a dance party. I took lots of pictures that I plan to get posted this weekend.
We have been learning lots of math games that will strengthen our math skills. We are now ready for the math center. We've been working on "counting on" beginning from any number 1-120. We learned that math is patterns. We learned a new card game called "Snappy Dressers" that will help us look at the small details to find patterns. We also learned how to use "10 Partners." We've been reviewing all the short vowels and how to use our understanding of short vowels to help us spell words correctly. In Social Studies we are learning about our "global address" - we live in a city (Marietta), a county (Cobb), a state (Georgia), a country (USA), a continent (North America) and a planet (Earth).
Reminder: Wednesday, August 29, is an Early Release Day. We will begin dismissal 2 hours early. Our lunchtime that day will be 10:21-10:51.

We have had an amazing first 5 days of school. I am already so in love with this class and what we are going to be able to do together. The Boosterthon Fun Run is off to a great start. Our class is leading 1st grade! Shout out to all our parents for making that happen.
We have been learning about working together as a team and treating others with kindness. We have been working on being a CHAMP, and we have several OWLs (Outstanding Wonderful Learners) who are earning stars for being CHAMP.
If you have not yet signed up with Remind, please do so. I will use it to send out reminders and pictures from our day. Also, I am working on setting up an email group for our class. I have sent out a test email. If you did not receive it, please email me at [email protected] so I can make sure you are included.
Thank you for everyone who has sent me your "Parent Homework." I have enjoyed reading about your children. I have not yet sent any responses, but will do so before the upcoming weekend is over.

Today was the first day of school. I thought the day was AMAZING! Everyone knew how they were to go home. We started the day off in Art. We then sorted and put away all of our supplies. We read a story, "The Day Monster Came to School." Monster mad lots of bad choices, until he learned the rules. We wrote and illustrated rules for monster. WOAH! What a great group of writers we are! Since it was raining, we couldn't go outside for recess. We made the best of it by building 3D shapes using flat shapes. Ms. Spinks was very impressed with the way we all worked cooperatively. We each drew a monster based on our answers to questions Ms. Spinks asked. Be sure to stop by and see them hanging on the wall in the hall. We ended the day with snack-time while Ms. Spinks started reading The Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark. Ms. Spinks took lots of pictures. Be sure to check them all out on the "Photos" page of this website.
Tomorrow we will have PE, so be sure to wear sneakers.

'Twas the day before Sneak-a-Peek and Ms. Spinks is so EXCITED! I am looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. Before you buy supplies, please look at my list. There are several items on the list that you will not need. If you have your supplies, you are welcome to bring them Monday. I KNOW this year is going to be FANTABULOUS!!
