The Spiccard Animal Museum
First Grade Project Based Learning SUCCESS!! We are so proud of the hard work of ALL our students. Working with a partner, they chose an animal they wanted to know more about. Mrs. Buro came in and taught about some new websites they could use to do research. They checked out books from the library to use for research. They did more research on their own at home! They were research masters!! They wrote a speech to tell others the important facts they learned. Using poster sized paper, they made a large model drawing of their animal. They painted the animals, cut them out and stuffed them. They helped create habitats for their animals. Finally, they invited other classes to come tour their museum. With immeasurable excitement, confidence, and poise, they told others about their animals. It was a FANTABULOUS day for Team Spiccard!

Random Acts of Kindness
Each Month we like to do a Random Act of Kindness for another class. During our STEAM activities, we create a poster and treat basket to give to a class in which one of our classmates has a brother or sister. Through this we learn that giving to others is a lot of fun and makes us feel like smiling. We also deliver fun gifts to the folks who work in the front office and take care of everyone in the school. We learn to appreciate the unsung heroes that keep our school running smoothly.

September STEAM Rotations
Every month we like to have special STEAM days. STEAM stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Parents donate supplies and volunteer their time to help us explore, be creative, and extend our first grade curriculum. The parent volunteers were fabulous! The students had a great time. Everyone went home with big smiles.

Every week we get time in the computer lab. We love being able to go to the new lab especially since it's just across the hall.
Collaborative Groups are a fun way to learn.
FIELD TRIP
Our first field trip was a Benjamin Franklin/Community trip around the Marietta Square. Benjamin Franklin helped start the first Fire Department. We visited the Marietta Fire Museum and Marietta Fire Station #1. He also helped start the first Public Library. We visited the main branch of the Cobb Public Library System. We heard a story about Benjamin Franklin and his friend, Thomas Jefferson. They both played an important role in establishing libraries. We also visited the Marietta Police Department where we got a tour and learned so much about how police officers are here to help us. We ended the day at Laurel Park for lunch and recess. It was an AMAZING day!

Our principal, Mrs. Bowen, visited our class. She introduced us to Growth Mindset. She also read a book to help us understand.
We read the story Personal Space Camp by Julia Cook. We then did a Response to Literature craftivity in which we worked with a partner to trace and decorate our own Personal Space.
Our first visit to the media center. Mrs. Buro read a story to us, and we got to check out some books.
We read the book A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue by Julia Cook. It gave us some great rules for helping us know how to handle situations. Then we did a Response to Literature craftivity in which we created a face on a paper plate and added a "tattle tongue."
One of our favorite parts of the day is DEAR time. That's when we get Drop Everything And Read somewhere comfy and quiet in the room. It is a super fun way to enjoy a good book.
Taking time during the first week of school to get to know our classmates. WE LOVE TEAM SPICCARD!!
Morning Work Creativity Using Shape Blocks
An Amazing Bunch of Students!!
We came to meet our teachers during Sneak a Peek. Our teachers made our families smile for the camera.
